How to clean your mattress

Ali

Cleaning mattresses is certainly an overlooked household chore. When was the last time you cleaned your mattress? Have you ever cleaned it?

Though not required regularly, cleaning your mattresses once in a while ensures that they are kept fresh and critter free. Most people don’t know how to clean their mattresses so here we provide our cleaning guidelines.

Different cleaning methods

There are many possible ways to clean your mattresses but we highlight to effective methods that do the job well.

The natural method

During the warmer seasons, it is possible to freshen up your mattresses by airing it outside under the warm sunshine. The sun’s ultraviolet light serves as a great tool to kill off that unwanted bacteria scattered around your mattress.

So how exactly do you use the sun to clean your mattress? The answer is as follows.

  • Firstly remove your bed sheets off of you mattress and place them in the washing machine, which will help to remove dust mites.
  • Next, take your mattress outside and leave it under the sunlight.
  • Once that is done it’s workout time! Using a bat or such like give your mattress a beating for a good 10 minutes on both sides. This will allow for dust, pealed skin flakes and hair to be removed.

And that’s that but do remember to turn your mattress onto its other sides later on in the day to ensure that the bacteria can be killed off on both ends.

The baking soda method

On the other hand, if you prefer a more hands on method, baking soda can be effective in giving your mattress a fresh feeling. Baking soda is both pure and natural and when dissolved in water can lead to effective stain removal. In order to use this method first:

  • Remove your bed sheets and place them in the washing machine.
  • Next vacuum up any dirt off of your mattress.
  • Once that is done it is time to make the baking soda solution. In order to do this you will need water, baking soda and a spray bottle. Firstly place 1-2 table spoons of baking soda into the spray bottle. Then fill up the rest of the spray bottle with warm water. And finally give the bottle a vigorous shake.
  • Evenly coat the baking soda solution over the mattress and leave to dry for around 2-3 hours.
  • End with a final vacuum once your mattress has completely dried.

What about those tough stains?

Removing dried blood stains

Baking soda and cold water act as the go to combination for removing those dreaded old blood stains off of your mattress. To do this:

  • Simply place 1-2 table spoons of baking soda in a spray bottle and fill the rest of the bottle with cold water. Blood stains dissolve in cold water and so it is critical that you only use cold water to make this solution.
  • Spray the stained area with the solution and gently blot it with a dry cloth leaving it to rest for at least an hour.
  • After that using another dry cloth blot the stained area to remove excess moisture.

Removing urine stains

White vinegar is perfect for removing urine stains, old or new. Make a solution consisting of equal parts of water and white vinegar. Then gently blot the desired area using the solution and a dry cloth. Finally use another dry cloth to remove the excess moisture.
