HOW TO CLEAN YOUR FRIDGE

Ali

In this article, we share fridge cleaning tips, to prevent it from smelling and protect your food from harmful bacteria.

From milk spills and funky odours to jars sticking to the glass shelves, fridges can soon start to look messy and release unpleasant odours. Cleaning your fridge is your best bet for preventing icky smells and the spread of germs. Here is our step-by-step guide on how to clean your fridge:

Empty the fridge

Before cleaning the fridge, take the food out and set aside two areas for setting items down: one area for anything that is expired and another area for items that need to be put back into the fridge.

Take all your shelves and drawers out

Next, switch off the appliance, let it come to room temperature and remove interior shelving, drawers and door racks. Wipe the surface of each shelf with a sponge dipped into a solution of hot water and liquid dish soap. If there are spills or food build-up that are harder to clean up, soak the shelf or drawer in the sink for a few minutes. Rinse with water and dry with a soft, clean cloth.

How to clean your frigde: on the inside

With the shelves and drawers out, spray a solution of vinegar and water on the interior of the fridge. Give it a good scrub and wipe everything clean with a microfiber cloth. The vinegar makes wonders not just at removing cake-on spills but germs and fridge smells too.

Another great way to restore the shine of your fridge is by using baking soda. Simply, make a paste of baking soda and water. Wipe the interior of the fridge with a soft, clean cloth. Rinse off and dry.

How to clean your fridge: on the outside

To clean the outside of the fridge and make it look like new, simply wet a soft cloth and apply baking soda and you are good to go. Rinse away the paste with a clean cloth and dry.

Do not forget to clean the door seals as they can quickly collect crumbs and spills. Start with vacuuming the seals using the crevice tool on your vacuum cleaner. Then, use a blunt knife to get into all the nooks and crannies. Simply, wrap a blunt knife with a soft cloth and dip it in a solution of vinegar and water. Run it along the crevices of the seals and rinse off thoroughly.

Freshen up the fridge

To fully clean your fridge, banish icky odours. All you need is baking soda. Simply put a box of baking soda in your fridge and watch it work like magic at absorbing the unpleasant smells.

Alternatively, coffee beans have smell-killing properties. Place a pouch of coffee beans in the fridge and let it stay for a few days to eliminate any lingering smells.
